Civita di Bagnoregio: discovering the “Dying City”

Set off on this round trip to Umbria with your private driver, who will pick you up by car at your hotel in Rome. Enjoy a comfortable trip to the Umbria region, famous for its sweet hilly landscape and culinary tradition.

Before reaching the town of Orvieto we will stop at Civita di Bagnoregio, a little village located at the border between Umbria and Latium. Founded more than 2,500 years ago by the Etruscans, Civita di Bagnoregio is also known today as the “dying city”. It rests atop a rock rising in a vast canyon constantly shaped by the erosive strength of wind and rain. Today, the only way in and out this surreal dimension is a pedestrian bridge.

Once crossed the huge stone passageway built by the Etruscans, you will find yourself in another world, a medieval hilltown featuring little lanes, potted geraniums and cobblestone alleys. Stroll through the lanes and reach the central square, heartbeat and pride of the village!

The town of Orvieto

Next, your driver will lead you right into the heart of Umbria region, in the town of Orvieto, one of the most striking and memorable hill towns in central Italy. The city of Orvieto sits on tufo vulcanic stone, surrounded by a plain scattered with cypress trees.

Walk up to the old-town to reach the hilltop heart of the city, the main piazza with the Orvieto Cathedral, dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. Marvel at the lively, colorful, Gothic facade, featuring golden mosaics, a large rose window and huge bronze doors.

Once inside, visit the main highlight of the Orvieto Cathedral, the Chapel of the Madonna of San Brizio, whose vault was decorated by Benozzo Gozzoli and Fra Angelico -who also painted the Niccoline Chapel inside the Vatican Museums - and Luca Signorelli.

Then, stop for a tasty lunch in a local trattoria. Taste typical Umbrian dishes, recipes and wines before heading back to your hotel in Rome with your driver.

Wine tasting

Upon request, we can arrange wine tastings in some of the finest wine cellars in the area. You will then have the opportunity to taste a variety of wines typical of Umbria region, which offers an array of grape varieties such as Sangiovese and Canaiolo.
